Life

Hermann Theodor Richter was born on March 2, 1894 in Oberpfannenstiel as the youngest of five children of the white goods worker Friedrich Hermann Richter and his wife Henriette Caroline Emma. Little is known about the childhood and youth of Hermann Theodor Richter, who was one of the most famous artists in Dresden around 1930. He is said to have gone to sea before he studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden from 1922 to 1927 as a student of Karl Albiker . Hermann Theodor Richter worked as a freelance sculptor and had his studio on Kaitzer Strasse in the south of the city.

Richter was a member of the Dresden Secession in 1932 and was involved in its working committee together with Erich Fraaß , Otto Griebel and Bernhard Kretzschmar . In 1933 Hermann Theodor Richter took over the management of the interest cartel of the Saxon artist associations . Together with this and the Dresden Secession in 1932, Richter protested against the installation of a National Socialist cultural policy in Dresden. After an order for the Stadtbank in Aue in 1938, Richter was drafted into service in the Wehrmacht . He broke up because of his military experience and committed suicide on June 13, 1943. After his untimely death and the destruction of his works and his family in the bombing raid on Dresden on 13/14. In February 1945 the sculptor was forgotten.

Hermann Theodor Richter inherited his preference for the female nude and portrait bust from his teacher. Nonetheless, he found his own, individual style of representation that was bound by classical design. He preferred the small format for his sculptures. Only a few works have survived, for example in the sculpture collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and in the Städtische Galerie Dresden . The only evidence of his work in public space is a group of figures on the former building of the Stadtbank Aue.
