Hermann Thyraeus SJ (* 1532 in Neuss ; † October 26, 1591 in Mainz ) was a German theologian and member of the Jesuit order.

He was born as Hermann Dorckens and called himself Latinized Thyraeus. He was sent to Rome from his home diocese of Cologne and lived as one of the first students in the Collegium Germanicum, established in 1552 . After studying theology, he was ordained priest in Rome in 1556 . The founder of the order Ignatius of Loyola accepted him into the Society of Jesus in the same year . He worked in the context of the Counter Reformation operated by the order in various leading positions.

Hermann Thyraeus initially worked as a theology lecturer in Ingolstadt . From 1560 to 1567 he was a preacher at the Church of Our Lady in Trier , and from 1567 to 1571 cathedral preacher in Trier. He was considered a theologically accomplished preacher and good speaker, so that he attracted many listeners. From 1564 he was also rector of the Trier Jesuit school . He had a close and good relationship with the Archbishop of Trier and Elector Jakob von Eltz and supported his efforts to push back the Reformation , namely on the express instructions of the episcopal in Neumagen .

In 1571 Thyraeus was elected Provincial of the Rhenish Jesuit Province and headed the province until April 1588. He then became Rector of the Mainz Jesuit College ; he held this office until shortly before his death.

His brother Peter Thyraeus (1546–1601) also joined the Society of Jesus and published numerous theological works as a professor in Würzburg.
