Life

After graduating from the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hanover in 1919 , Wattenberg studied chemistry at the University of Munich and graduated magna cum laude with a doctorate from Otto Hönigschmid in 1923 . After brief employment in industry at Riedel-de Haën , he became an assistant at the Technical University of Danzig at von Wartenberg in 1924 , where he qualified as a professor. In autumn of that year he accepted an offer from Alfred Merz and took part as a chemist in the German Atlantic Expedition with the Meteor (1925–1927). As a member of the German Scientific Commission for Marine Research, he worked for a long time in Helsinki , where, together with Kurt Buch (1881–1967), he carried out fundamental studies on carbonic acid in the sea. After the expedition he worked as a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation at the universities of Munich and Berlin until April 1934 . From 1934 he received a teaching position at the University of Kiel for physics and chemistry of the sea. He continued to take part as a chemist in research trips of the Meteor in 1929, 1933 and 1935 in the Icelandic-Greenlandic waters. In 1938 he was appointed associate professor and head of department at the Institute for Oceanography (IfM), founded in 1937 on the east bank of the Kiel Fjord . During the war he also worked at the naval observatories in Wilhelmshaven and Greifswald. On May 1, 1944, Wattenberg was appointed full professor and director of the institute. On July 24, 1944, he and eight employees were killed in a bomb attack at the institute.

In 1958, the research cutter of the Institute of Oceanography was Südfall in the name of Hermann Wattenberg baptized.
