Theodor Köppen , baptized Hermann Wilhelm Theodor Köppen (born July 27, 1828 in Brake / Weser, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg ; † March 3, 1903 in Nymphenburg ), was a German naval , history and portrait painter .

Life

Theodor Köppen was born the son of a landowner. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and from October 22, 1851 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich under Wilhelm von Kaulbach. After completing his studies, he went on study trips to Italy , after which he settled in Munich . He mainly painted pictures of the sea, as well as history pictures and portraits.

In 1896 he painted the altarpiece for the St. Nikolai Church in Stollhamm near his home town on the mediation of Hermann Allmers .

Köppen was with Babetta, geb. Wieser (* 1843), daughter of a music teacher, married and father of the painters Wilhelm Köppen (1876–1917) and Max Köppen (1877–1960) and Katharina Köppen (1881–1907).
