Hermann von Reith

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann von Reith († 1357 ) was as Hermann I abbot of the Schlüchtern Monastery from 1336 to 1344 and from 1344 to 1357 as Hermann II. Abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Stephan in Würzburg .

Requirements of choice

Hermann von Reith was initially a monk in the Fulda monastery . It was not until March 1335 that he moved to the Schlüchtern monastery. It can no longer be proven whether this was already a planned step with regard to the following events.

After the double election of bishops in Würzburg in 1333, the Schlüchtern monastery decided in favor of Hermann II. Hummel von Lichtenberg and against Otto II. Von Wolfskeel . Hermann II represented the imperial party , Otto II the papal party. The Pope then excommunicated the monastery. In this situation, Hartmann II was elected by the convent of the monastery in 1335 . The monastery elected the abbot in the Schlüchtern monastery. The leadership of the monastery was closely networked with the families of the lower nobility in the area and with each other. When Bishop Hermann II died in the same year, 1335, the remaining bishop, Otto II von Wolfskeel, did not recognize Hartmann II as abbot. Hartmann II therefore resigned from his office, probably at the beginning of 1336.

choice

In 1336 Hermann I was elected as abbot by the convent of the Schlüchtern monastery. This happened - as the following events show - probably under pressure from the Würzburg bishop, who wanted to bring the "opposition" convention under control. There were violent arguments between the convent and prior on the one hand and the abbot on the other. For the first time in 1341 a settlement had to be made between the two by the bishop . But that did not remedy the rejection of the abbot. The bishop solved the problem by giving Hermann I a different position as abbot: in 1344, as Hermann II, he was elected abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Stephan in Würzburg. He held this office until his death in 1357.
