The Hermannschacht in the Harz mining region is a mine operated from the first half of the 19th century to the 20th century in the area of ​​the city of Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . The shaft was on the edge of the Elbingerode mining area on the Büchenberg (Harz) . The remains of the mine are now a mining monument. The new manhole cover, which was installed in winter 2017/18, with the distinctive entry holes, serves as a roost for bats. The Hermannschacht is a station on the Elbingerode mining trail in the Harz Mountains and is located in the nature reserve Büchenberg tunnel system near Elbingerode .

Namesake

The Hermannschacht was named after the Hereditary Count Hermann zu Stolberg-Wernigerode , son of Count Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode , the founder of the Henrichshütte in Hattingen .
