Hermannus Alemannus

Hermannus Alemannus (Latin for Hermann the German ; * in the 13th century ; † November 10, 1272 ) was a bishop and member of the Toledo School of Translators in the 13th century.

Hermannus Alemannus was in Toledo from 1240 to 1256 and, with the help of Saracens, translated Aristotle and his commentators from Arabic into Latin. He was then in the service of King Manfred of Sicily and from 1266 to 1272 Bishop of Astorga .

He translated the Nicomachean ethics of Aristotle with the commentary of Averroes , the Summa Alexandrinorum (a compendium of the Nicomachean ethics), the rhetoric of Aristotle with commentary by al-Fārābī (Didascalia in Rethoricam Aristotiliis ex glosa Alpharabii).

He also translated psalms from Latin into Castilian (taking into account the Hebrew text).

Like other translators at the Toledo School, he used Arabic translators. He himself said to Roger Bacon that his knowledge of Arabic was not good. Hermannus Alemannus met Bacon during a stay in Paris in the 1240s, where he possibly also met Robert Grosseteste .
