Hermengild Li Yi

Hermengild Li Yi OFM (李毅) (born November 11, 1923 ; † May 24, 2012 ) was a Chinese religious and underground bishop of Changzhi in Lu'an (潞安). He spent 20 years in communist imprisonment and was seen as a role model for the Chinese clergy.

Life

Li Yi was ordained a priest on February 6, 1949 after completing his theological and philosophical training . He worked as a pastor, among others for the migrants from northern China in Wangde and as a priest in Changzhi. From 1951 to 1955 he completed a history degree at Tianjin University . With the beginning of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, he was placed under arrest by the communist rulers and was not released until 1985.

In 1998, Hermengild Li Yi was appointed bishop of the northern Chinese diocese of Changzhi. He belonged to the underground church loyal to the Pope and not recognized by the Chinese state.
