Hermione Spies
Hermine Spies-Hardtmuth (born February 25, 1857 in Löhnberger Hütte , † February 26, 1893 in Wiesbaden ) was a German oratorio and concert singer (alto).
Life
Hermine Spies was considered one of the leading contralto players in Europe and an excellent interpreter of the works of Johannes Brahms , to whom she was personally friendly.
The Spies family settled in Wiesbaden in 1879. She trained her voice with the vocal teacher Julius Stockhausen at Dr. Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main and made her stage debut in Mannheim in July 1880.
At the height of her career, she married the judge Walter Hardtmuth in 1892 and retired into private life. A year after the marriage, Spies, who was expecting a child, died shortly after her 36th birthday.
In memory of the singer, the city council of Wiesbaden decided in 1958 to name Herminenstrasse in the Green Quarter .
