Hermogenes (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermogenes ( ancient Greek Ἑρμογένης ) was a Greek architect of Hellenism who is passed down by name through Vitruvius . The place of origin is assumed to be Carian Alabanda on the one hand , referring to a passage in Vitruvius (III 2, 6) which is, however, incomprehensible , and Priene on the other hand , since a votive inscription found there names an architect of this name. Following the current research opinion, Hermogenes worked at the turn of the 2nd century BC. BC (about 220-190 BC), however, until a few decades ago, its activity was often in the second half of the 2nd century BC. Dated.

According to Vitruvius (III 2, 6), Hermogenes invented the pseudodipteros , which he realized as an architect with the Artemis temple of Magnesia on the meander . According to Vitruvius (III 3, 8), he also developed the symmetries and proportions of Eustylos , which he implemented at the Temple of Dionysus by Teos . Hermogenes had left theoretical treatises on both buildings, the reflex of which can be found in Vitruvius (Vitruv VII praef. 12). In addition, his authorship is suspected for the following buildings, among others: the altar in the Artemision of Magnesia, the Temple of Zeus on the agora there and the temple of Apollon Smintheus in Chryse . The introduction of the Attic-Ionic basis and the Attic-Ionic frieze are attributed to him as architectural innovations within the architecture of Asia Minor .
