Pierre Gros
Pierre Gros (born May 7, 1939 in Incheville ) is a French classical archaeologist and Latinist .
Gros studied from 1960 at the École normal supérieure in Paris and received the Agrégation in 1963 . From 1966 to 1969 he was a member of the École française de Rome . From 1969 to 1972 he was assistant for Latin studies at the Sorbonne, from 1972 to 1976 Directeur des Études at the École française de Rome, in 1974 he received his habilitation as a Docteur d'Etat . From 1976 until his retirement in 2004 he taught as a professor of Latin language and civilization at the Université de Provence . From 1981 to 1995 he headed the Institut de recherches sur l'architecture antique at the Center national de la recherche scientifique . From 1995 to 2005 he was a member of the Institut universitaire de France .
As a specialist in Hellenistic and Roman architecture and urban development, Pierre Gros took part in numerous excavations in Italy, France, Tunisia and Turkey. In addition, he is an important connoisseur of Vitruvius and editor of an influential critical partial edition of his work.
Pierre Gros is a member of the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio in Vicenza and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . In 2010 he was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize . He has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2004 and of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres since 2012 .
