The Hermsdorfer See is an inland body of water in the Berlin district of Hermsdorf and part of the Natura 2000 area Tegeler Fließal .

location

It is located in the north of Berlin in the Reinickendorf district between Alt-Hermsdorf and the Kienwerder settlement. It gets its name from the incorporated town of Hermsdorf. In a part of the lake that has since silted up, the islands of Großer Werder and Kleiner Werder were located in the 18th century.

history

The Hermsdorfer See served the people living by the lake early on as an important source of fish and reeds, and the moist meadows were used as pastureland. The neighboring towns of Hermsdorf and Lübars fought over the lake until the beginning of the 17th century due to a fiefdom . In 1622 a settlement was made, which awarded the estate to the Hermsdorf landlord Sigismund von Goetze . The Lübarser fishermen continued to fetch fish from the Hermsdorfer See, so that there were constant complaints and disputes. Only at the end of the 18th century did a more peaceful existence begin with the division of the lake.

In the course of the next 200 years, the original Großer Hermsdorfer See largely silted up and shrunk considerably. This humid biotope , however, led to the development of flora and fauna and was therefore worth protecting. Numerous bushes, alders , willows and reeds define the shoreline of the lake. A five-kilometer circular hiking trail touches the housing estates, former clay pits , peat cuttings and the Albtalweg nature reserve . There are also guided tours for those interested.
