Hernâni Cidade

Hernâni Cidade (born February 7, 1887 in Redondo , † January 2, 1975 in Évora ) was a Portuguese Romanist and Lusitanist .

Life

Cidade, who originally wanted to be a priest, turned around and became a high school teacher of Portuguese in Lisbon and Leiria (1914). During the First World War he fought in Flanders and from April 1918 spent nine months in German captivity. After returning to Portugal, he taught Romance philology from 1919 at the newly founded Faculty of Literature (Letras) at the University of Porto , from 1921 as a professor, from 1926 as a professor with a doctorate. After the faculty closed in 1928, he went to the University of Lisbon and taught there until his retirement in 1957.

From 1961 he was a corresponding member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL). In 1967, Cidade founded the magazine Cultura Portuguesa with Carlos Selvagem .
