Hernando Alonso (* around 1460 in Niebla , Spain ; † October 16, 1528 in Mexico City ) was a Marran explorer and is considered the first victim of the Inquisition in North America .

The Spanish new Christian Hernando Alonso emigrated to Cuba , where he joined the conquistador Hernán Cortés in 1516 . As a blacksmith and ship's carpenter, he was involved in building up the expedition fleet. In 1519 he reached Mexico with the conquering army of Cortés. Because of his services in the conquest of Tenochtitlán , Cortés transferred him to the country estate in Actopan , from where he was successful in the meat trade. In 1528 he was denounced as a crypto Jew and executed at the stake with another Marranen in Mexico's first public car café .
