history
Hernani was founded around 1850 by a Guiuan settler named Miguel Candido. Hernani became an independent parish by issuing a royal decree on January 4, 1864.
On October 12, 1897, Hernani was hit by huge tidal waves. More than 300 people were killed, public buildings and houses were destroyed, including the newly built stone church. As a result of this catastrophe, the survivors moved the main town to a safe place about one and a half kilometers inland, to the place of today's main town.
Immediately after the Philippine-American War , Hernani lost its independence as a municipality and was incorporated as a barrio (district) of the municipality of Lanang (today's Llorente ). In 1912, Hernani became an independent township again through the passing of a government decree by the US Governor General of the Philippines, Leonard Wood .
