The Hernstein Institute for Management and Leadership is an Austrian institution for leadership development. The Vienna Chamber of Commerce, one of the nine regional organizations of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, is the founder and institute sponsor .

offer

The institute specializes in the design of learning and development processes. The portfolio includes open and in-house development programs and training courses in which the specific Hernstein learning approach is used. The focus is on practical orientation, a variety of methods and what is known as advisory training. The combination of professional input, active work and intensive reflection phases should enable sustainable learning. Potential analyzes, coaching, moderation and future labs complete the offer. The institute has been offering the Leadership master’s course since 2017. Around half of the events are in-house events, the second half is divided between development programs, potential analyzes and training.

As the main venue since its inception, the in the Lower Austrian market town serves Hernstein location listed Hernstein Castle , from which also the name derives Institute. Around 60 trainers are currently training and researching at the Hernstein Institute. Many of them have had group dynamics and / or systemic training.

history

As early as 1963, the Vienna Chamber of Commerce under the then President Rudolf Sallinger acquired the castle from the previous owner Erste Österreichische Sparkasse . Sallinger's idea was to use the castle as a training center for managers. After the completion of the expansion to a seminar center, the first seminar took place in Hernstein Castle on February 15, 1966, a business simulation game. In the course of 1965 28 workshops were held. In 1967, Traugott Lindner and a team of trainers held the first group dynamics seminar in Hernstein, thus laying the foundation for the conceptual orientation of Hernstein and the focus on behavioral training. Group dynamics has been a central component of the Hernstein Institute since then. In the following years the Hernstein Institute succeeded in establishing an international network. Experts such as the "father of motivational research" Ernest Dichter , the bureaucracy critic Cyril Northcote Parkinson , the motivation expert Frederick Herzberg and the consumer protection attorney, later presidential candidate and symbolic figure of the left alternatives in the USA, Ralph Nader , were invited to conferences in Hernstein.

The 1970s brought a further elaboration of the fundamentals of the Hernstein philosophy, which is still valid today: the connection of economic aspects with social competence. From 1973 the Hernstein Institute offered in-house training in addition to seminars. In 1976, the left-liberal economist John Kenneth Galbraith from Harvard spoke on the occasion of the celebration of 10 years of Hernstein . In the first 10 years a total of 1083 events with 22,810 participants were carried out.

The 1980s were dominated by a holistic view of organizations. Corporate culture has become the key concept and organizational psychology has become an important aspect of training. This development was taken into account with the establishment of the INTRO (internal training and organizational development) division. Other speakers in the second decade of existence were Ota Šik , Igor Ansoff , Vance Packard , Paul Watzlawick , Joseph Weizenbaum , John Elkins ( Naisbitt Group ) and Frederic Vester .

For the 20th anniversary of the Hernstein Institute, the American economist spoke with Austrian roots Peter Drucker on innovation and entrepreneurship in society . In the 20 years from its foundation to 1986, Hernstein carried out 3,087 events with 54,093 participants. Coaching was also offered for the first time in 1987 . The physicist and systems theorist Fritjof Capra , the cyberneticist and constructivist Heinz von Foerster and the organizational development expert Peter Senge taught in Hernstein.

The 1990s were largely shaped by the following topics: the manager's task as a coach , the development of intercultural skills and change management - change management . In 1991 the first university course for young entrepreneurs began. In 1992, Hernstein research projects dealt with the topics of conflict grammar and the environment and management . The book "Group Dynamics" has been published. Hernstein was granted the status of a non-university scientific institution. In 1994, Hernstein Castle was expanded to include another wing. In 1998 Katharina Lichtmannegger (formerly Fischer-Ledenice) took over the management of the institute.

In the 2000s the institute was thematically under the impression of great change dynamics through globalization and internationalization. Intercultural awareness , self-management and the ability to reflect became the focus of leadership skills development. From 2001 onwards, Hernstein published regular studies on trends in personnel and organizational development with the Hernstein Management Report . Hernstein has been offering potential analyzes for managers since 2005. In 2006, on the 40th anniversary of the institute, Hernstein was able to refer to around 100,000 participants in around 4,500 events. At the same time, speakers such as Alfried Längle , Joachim Bauer , Edgar Schein and Rüdiger Safranski rang in the thematic focus of the coming years at the anniversary symposium under the title Leadership Makes Sense . In 2008 an interdisciplinary research project confirmed the effectiveness of the "Hernstein Principle" learning approach.

From 2010 the institute increased its focus on leadership competence. Volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous times ("VUCA") call for leaders who inspire others and enable them to change. Agile leadership , transformational leadership , collaboration and co-creation therefore thematically accompany the 50th anniversary of the institute in 2016. At the same time, the book "Because leadership must change. Tasks and self-image in the digitized world" is published. The start of the new master’s degree in Leadership took place in autumn 2017 in cooperation with the FHWien .
