Heroina isonycterina is a cichlid found in the upper reaches of some of the Amazonian tributaries ( Río Napo , Caquetá , Rio Tigre , Corrientes , Río Pastaza and Río Putumayo ) in northern Peru, Ecuador and southern Colombia.

features

The fish are about twelve centimeters long and resemble in their external shape of the genus Heros , which the genus name Heroina indicates. Large, up to twelve centimeters long specimens are more elongated and pointed than the smaller ones. Typical of the species and genus is the short jaw, the short tail stalk and the pattern with vertical bands on the sides of the body. The caudal fin and the bases of the dorsal and anal fin are densely scaled. There are three or four rows of scales on the "cheeks", 27 to 29 are counted in a middle longitudinal row on the sides of the body. In contrast to the closely related genus Caquetaia , in Heroina isonycterina the lower jaw does not protrude and the single-pointed jaw teeth are not enlarged.

The higher fin formula values come from specimens from the Ecuadorian Rio Napo. The fish from the Caquetá have a larger eye relief, those from Peru have a longer tail stem.

Way of life

Heroina isonycterina lives in fast and slow flowing rivers, with cloudy or clear water, sandy or gravelly soils, in vegetation-free or overgrown rivers and at temperatures of 24 to 27 ° C. The species forms a parent family in which both sexes take care of eggs and fry.
