action
The respected Professor Marco Spaangard is planning a large-scale trip around the world and engages a certain Georg Lindemann as his personal servant. He looks very much like the professor. During the trip, the professor falls seriously ill and is from then on paralyzed. When both men return after several years, the servant takes the position of his master. Nobody noticed for a long time, until one day Prof. Spaangard's maid suspected and exposed the servant Lindemann.
Production notes
Herr und Diener was created in the Greenbaum film studio in Berlin-Weißensee . The film passed the censorship in October 1917 and premiered in November 1917 in the marble house. The film had a prelude and three acts and was 1,499 meters long.
Albert Bassermann's wife Else Bassermann wrote the screenplay under the pseudonym Hans Hennings.
Reviews
“A film full of tension, witty and cleverly conceived, staged with care and security, brilliantly photographed and as a trump card - Bassermann in the leading role. (...) With grandiose virtuosity, Bassermann masters all the demands that the portrayal of this difficult double role makes on him. His naturalistic art of detailing, his expressive play of gestures achieved a truly shocking effect. It was an aesthetic pleasure to watch his mine play during the encounter with mother and child. (...) The other actors, especially Else Bassermann, weren't too far behind Bassermann. Gärtner's fabulous direction, the interior fittings of the rooms he created are a success in themselves. "
