Coat of arms of those from the mountains (Schalkesberge)

The Lords of the Mountains (also: The Lords of the Schalksberg ) were a noble family that ruled from 1096 on the Schalksburg above Hausberge in Porta Westfalica . The diocese of Minden belonged to their sphere of influence in East Westphalia .

history

According to Max von Spießen , the family seat of the noble family von dem Berge, the Wittekindsburg , should be near Minden . Since the Wittekindsburg was, according to recent research results, a refuge and from the 3rd – 1st Century BC This is rather unlikely. In 1096 the lords of the mountains came into possession of the Schalksburg . After its owners, the castle was then called "Haus zum Berge". From this the name Hausberge developed for the village below the castle. The lords of the mountains died out at the end of the 14th century.

After the decline of royal influence in the diocese of Minden an der Mittelweser , the dukes of Billung exercised the monastery vogtei from around 1073/1080 . Their feudal people , the lords of the mountains, acted as hereditary noblemen between 1096 and 1398.

  • With Wedekind I. they provided the first of the Minden church bailiffs from 1124.
  • Under nobleman Wedekind III. (1224–1269) the bailiwick had already become hereditary. He had already bought large estates. His castle was in the area of today's town of Hausberge , 6 km south of Minden. Today the Schalksberg is called Jakobsberg. In 1241 he gave the Augustinian convent Wennigsen a farmyard so that they could celebrate an annual memorial on the day his father died. This donation was made with the express consent of his eldest son Heinrich. In 1265 he founded the Dominican monastery in Lahde (10 km north of Minden). Wedekind III. was married to Richenza (Richedis) von Hoya, they had the children:
    • Heinrich , successor of the nobleman Wedekind III. from 1269; as such, he completely changed his attitude towards Lahde.
    • Gerhard , successor to the nobleman Heinrich from around 1285; 1301 feuded together with the nobleman Simon I. zur Lippe the Minden bishop . Although they were defeated, the good relationships were strengthened by the marriage of their children (who later became the nobleman) Wedekind IV. Vom Berge and Elisabeth (Lysa) zur Lippe.
    • Volquin , from 1269 Minden canon, then cathedral choir, from 1298 cathedral provost
    • Irmengard , wife of Count Otto von Everstein
    • Jutta ⚭ 1272 the Count Ludolf von Wunstorf ( Ludolf I. von Roden ; named from 1222; † June 15, 1282; Count von Roden ; 1249 Count von Limmer; 1251 Count von Wunstorf; also Vogt of the Möllenbeck Monastery?)

The last of the mountain family, Bishop Otto III. von Minden (1384–1397), died in 1398 and bequeathed the rule of the Minden church.
