Life

Otto comes from the family of the gentlemen of the mountains , as precious bailiffs in Minden country were employed. His father was Wedekind von Schalksberg (* around 1300). The area of influence of the bailiffs extended to the bishopric of Minden , the southern part of the diocese of Minden . The members of the family also called themselves "von Schalksburg" or "von Schalksberge" after their headquarters in Schalksburg . The bailiffs from the mountains were often represented among the canons in the Minden cathedral chapter . Otto's brother Widukind was bishop of Minden from 1369 to 1383 . Otto followed him from 1384 to 1397 as Otto III. on the Minden throne. When Otto died after his resignation (resigned on December 22, 1397) on February 1, 1398, the Lords of Berge died out. The possession of the bailiwick fell to the diocese. The Schalksburg became a state castle and was already used as a residence by Bishop Wilhelm II .
