Schalksburg

The Schalksburg is an abandoned hilltop castle near Hausberge , a district of Porta Westfalica , in the Minden-Lübbecke district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The hilltop castle was on the right bank of the Weser in the breakthrough valley Porta Westfalica below the Jakobsberg in a dominant position.

history

It was first mentioned in writing as Schalarborg or Scalaborg around 1018, but the founders and time of establishment are unknown.

The owner, Duke Bernhard II (Saxony) , got into a dispute with Emperor Heinrich II around 1020 and blocked his way to Bremen. After the siege, Bernhard submitted and probably lost the Schalksburg. Possibly the castle fell to the Lords of the Mountains , whose line died out again at the end of the 14th century. The castle then came to the Principality of Minden in 1398 and became a state castle . In the course of the administration of the offices, the seat of the Hausberge office was established here .

The castle thus became the starting point for the settlement of today's Hausberge, which received market rights in 1618.

In 1679 the Schalksburg was sacked by the French. After it became increasingly dilapidated in the following years, it was demolished from 1707 to 1723.

investment

From the once extensive complex, which was demolished in 1708, only minor structural remains have survived, including the former gatehouse . The single-storey quarry stone building over the half-sunken basement was probably built before 1562. The roof structure was extensively renewed in 1663. The immediately adjoining Drost en apartment was built in 1708 as a two-storey plastered solid building, the upper storey of which was partly made of half-timbered houses . Major modifications were made in 1813. The old interior layout was largely destroyed in the course of the renovation carried out at the beginning of the 1990s . These measures resulted in an extensive loss of the original substance. The immediate vicinity of the monument has meanwhile been devalued by "historicizing" new buildings that occupy the former castle area.
