Mechthild from the mountain
Mechthild von dem Berge , also known as Mechtildis de Monte , († September 12, 1383 ) was the abbess of Freckenhorst Abbey .
Life
Origin and family
Mechthild von dem Berge was born as the daughter of Wedekind von dem Berge and his wife Lisa zur Lippe. The von dem Berge family with their ancestral home near Hausberge provided the Minden monastery bailiffs. Mechthild had four siblings, including Lisa (abbess in Herford) and Gerburg (provess in Herzebrock).
Career and work
Mechthild was elected abbess in Freckenhorst in 1360 or 1361. From her term of office there are still a number of documents in which legal transactions (purchases, gifts and sales) are included. The canon Heinrich Pyrns received his obediences from the abbess on September 10, 1383, two days before Mechthild's death . Her successor in office as abbess was Ingeburg von Oldenburg .
