Gravestone for Cimburg von Winkl (1448) with coat of arms

The von Winkl gentlemen were a ministerial family of the Babenbergs who lived in Tullnerfeld .

Around 1140 a Poppo de Vinchele is mentioned who appears in the Niederalteich monastery as a witness for Margrave Leopold , which also proves his membership of the Babenberg entourage. He is mentioned several times in documents relating to Göttweig Abbey and Krems an der Donau . He and his brothers gain a foothold between Krems and Tulln, where they acquire properties, including the former royal estate Sigemareswerd in Winkl , which gave them their name. From there they develop their influence and over time their descendants acquire the dominions in Königsbrunn am Wagram , Oberrußbach , Atzenbrugg , Tulbing and Ried am Riederberg . They were also active in the city of Tulln.

Its ancestral seat was later the now abandoned Winklberg Castle in Mitterstockstall , but the descendants, which branched out in numerous branch lines, can be traced throughout Lower Austria until the 15th century .
