The Roman Catholic Church of Sankt Stephan on Baumkirchner Platz in Berg am Laim is the old parish church of Baumkirchen in what is now the city of Munich .

history

The name is derived from an early medieval wooden church, a tree-lined church . Its construction could go back to around 800, because a document from 813 reports that a church foundation was given to the diocese of Freising. However, the church lost its independence as a parish church as early as 1806 due to a royal decree to the brotherhood church of St. Michael , to which it now serves as a subsidiary church .

Building

The current building is a late Gothic wall pillar church with a three-sided choir closure from the year 1511. In terms of its structural shape, it resembles the recently completed Munich churches of the late Gothic, in particular the Salvator Church . The towers of both churches have a high pointed roof. St. Stephan is still surrounded by their cemetery. The interior has five bays with pillars, from which the vault ribs used to radiate before the church was baroque in 1713-27. Further restorations took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 2006 the tower was renovated.
