Church of St. Stephan in Baumkirchen

Baumkirchen is a district of the Bavarian capital, Munich, in the Berg am Laim district .

history

The parish village was first mentioned in 870 as "ad Pouminunchirihum". The name means either "Church made of tree trunks" or "Church surrounded by trees". The center was around the Catholic Church of St. Stephen , which is one of the oldest documented churches in the Munich area. A document from the year 1052 by Emperor Heinrich III. documents the handover of Baumkirchen to the canons of St. Veit in Freising .

In the course of secularization , St. Stephan lost its status as a parish church to the brotherhood church of St. Michael in Berg am Laim due to a royal decree and became a branch church itself .

In 1808, Baumkirchen was incorporated into the Hofmark Berg am Laim and in 1818 the place became part of the newly founded municipality of Berg am Laim.

On July 1, 1913, Baumkirchen was incorporated into Munich as part of the Berg am Laim community.
