In 1969 the Matgendorf teacher Rolf-Peter Bartz and his student community for nature and local history researchers began renovating the former manor ensemble to gradually build up what is now the Thünen Museum. From 1990, further listed buildings and facilities were expanded and the Thünengesellschaft eV was founded in Tellow; From 1993 to 1999 the museum belonged to the Teterower Kreis cultural foundation . In 1999, Thünengut Tellow gGmbH was founded , which operates the museum today; The museum ensemble also has its own farmed agricultural enterprise, whose profits support the Thünen Museum financially.

The Thünen Museum Tellow now comprises nine buildings and 20 hectares of land.
