history

Street names still remind of the lost homeland
Herrenwörth- a quiet residential area

The name Herrenwörth goes back to the local field name. The area was once a meadow land that belonged to the Rohrenfeld stud farm . In 1872, the grass of the Herrenwörtherwiese was put up for auction to the highest bidder in the Neuburg advertising paper.

A few decades later, the area was used as a large parade ground for the 15th Infantry Regiment . After the Second World War , the site was first used as a sheep pasture, then the city of Neuburg turned it into a building site of eleven hectares. Above all, displaced farmers should find a new home. Six single-family houses and 22 semi-detached houses were planned and built between 1954 and 1957. The construction planning was in the hands of the Bavarian State Estate in Munich. At that time food was still in short supply and therefore the new settlers should get on their feet by making additional purchases. There were special regulations for this. Originally, only those who had worked in agriculture for at least several years were allowed to become settlers here. He was obliged to keep small animals such as pigs, chickens, geese and goats in Herrenwörth. Therefore, an outbuilding with a garden was planned and approved for these new citizens.

460 people were the new citizens of Herrenwörth, around 80 percent of all country teams displaced from their homes, and only 20 percent locals. The aim was actually to double the number of residents. Later agriculture was shelved as a sideline. Herrenwörth was further expanded and as of December 31, 2008 now had 640 inhabitants from nine nations. Street names such as Altvaterstrasse, Budweisstrasse or Prachatitzstrasse are still reminiscent of the former homeland.

Correctional facility

The correctional facility in Neuburg-Herrenwörth

Between 1985 and 1990 the correctional facility Neuburg-Herrenwörth was built in Herrenwörth . The construction volume was put at 54 million marks, but at the same time this created 125 new jobs.

On July 24, 1985, the representatives of the authorities laid the foundation stone for the construction project, among them the then Bavarian Minister of Justice, August Lang. To commemorate this historical event, the daily newspapers “Neuburger Rundschau”, “Süddeutsche Zeitung” and “Donaukurier” came with a certificate in a copper cover. After a construction period of almost five years, prisoners first occupied the building in March 1990 .
