history

The St. Wendelin Chapel

There is a lot of guesswork about Feldkirchen, its name and its origins. Not even the experts were able to fathom where the name comes from, because there is a field or fields, but we are looking in vain for a church. What will find is a chapel that is privately owned. The Roman road once passed Feldkirchen. Urn graves and finds of bronze jewelry and bronze parts suggest that people lived or settled here as early as the 12th to 9th centuries.

The former Widdumsgüter , according to which Feldkirchen was never its own parish , but was always incorporated into Sankt Peter in Neuburg an der Donau , also pose a mystery . The suspicion is close that these Widdumsgüter belonged to the bishop of Augsburg. In 1343 Feldkirchen is mentioned by name in the Pappenheimer Urbar . Around 1790 the place had 29 properties, in 1905 23 properties with 170 Catholics and four Old Catholics were registered in Feldkirchen.

Today, despite its incorporation into Neuburg, the Feldkirchen district has remained a prominent part of the population, and part of the industry has also settled in this corridor area.

If you want to go from the city center to Feldkirchen, you have to go through a railway underpass. Originally, the current Bahnhofsstraße led over the site of today's Neuburg train station directly to Feldkirchen. With the construction of the railway, the access road had to be changed. The Feldkirchner wanted a pedestrian path over the station tracks, but this was not approved.

St. Wendelin's Chapel

The small sacred building is quite inconspicuous, hidden behind buildings in the shade of trees. Only the name “Kapellenweg” brings the visitor there. This chapel is a gem for the local residents.

The founders of this chapel are Jakob Appel and his father Georg Wastlbauer, who thereby redeemed a vow . The bugbear "plague" was rampant in this area and the two vowed to build a chapel if they were spared it. Your request was granted. Out of gratitude, they built a St. Wendelin's Chapel , which was inaugurated on October 20, 1756 by St. Peter's dean Lindendorn. His old sacristan served as minister. The consecration day was exactly the patronage .

The chapel contains everything that is necessary for a sacred building. The altar is decorated with a picture of St. Wendelin, but the Way of the Cross and the " Eternal Light " are also present. The ceiling painting shows St. Wendelin as the patron saint of animals. A wooden plaque with the inscription: "Today salvation happened to this house, October 20, 1756" commemorates the consecration.

This chapel also commemorates those who died in the two world wars in Feldkirchen. A little bell still calls the believers to prayer today. There used to be five sacred masses here. Clergymen from the responsible parish of St. Peter in Neuburg still celebrate a service several times a year.
