The Kahlhof is a remote farm in the administrative district of Upper Bavaria . It is located three kilometers from Neuburg an der Donau on the edge of the Donaumoos .

The wasteland once belonged to the municipality of Feldkirchen and came to the large district town of Neuburg an der Donau on January 1, 1978 during the municipal territorial reform . Today Gnadenfeld still belongs to the Feldkirchen district. On December 31, 2008, five residents were registered at the Kahlhof. The desert is known in the area because of the pilgrimage chapel "Maria im Gnadenfeld" belonging to the courtyard .

The Kahlhof

The Kahlhof goes back to a Schwaige . The Kayhof, as it was then called, was first recorded in writing in 1300. When Swedish troops moved through during the Thirty Years' War , the homestead burned down in 1633. In 1646 Wolfgang Michael Silbermann bought the Kahlhof as a ruin from the Neuburg Benedictine nuns . In 1656, Count Palatine Philipp Wilhelm bought the homestead and also some houses in the Upper Suburb for his landscape chancellor Wolfgang Michael Silbermann as Hofmark "Gnadenegg". In 1662 the Hofmark was divided into two country estates. The Pfennigmeister Nikolaus von Müller received the building in the city, the von Silbermann family the Kahlhof.

The name problem that arose in the course of the distribution of property was solved by a court ruling in 1668: Baron von Müller continued to use the name "Gnadenegg". Silbermann and the Kahlhof were given the name "Gnadenfeld". The estate was inherited again and again within the family and finally came to the pharmacist Ignaz von Eyb and his son in 1847.

Today the homestead is a modern agricultural operation, which often serves as a showpiece. In particular, strawberries and vegetables that are grown on the farm are marketed directly.

Creation of the Kahlhof Chapel "Maria im Gnadenfeld"

The Kahlhof Chapel

The predecessor of today's chapel was a small wooden chapel. Around 1650, the then court owner Wolfgang Wilhelm Michael von Silbermann had it demolished and replaced with a new one. Silbermann, who was a devotee of Mary , the mother of Jesus , had a statue of Mary put up in the chapel.

A copy of the black Madonna of Czestochowa was in the princely choir of the Neuburg Court Church . The wife of the Neuburg Duke Philipp Wilhelm , the royal princess Anna Katharina Konstanze from Poland, is said to have brought the figure from her home country. Silbermann had this miraculous image transferred to the Kahlhof and erected in the chapel.

The patronage of the church is " Mariae name ".

The Madonna was soon said to have miraculous powers. "Maria im Gnadenfeld" quickly developed into a popular and much-visited pilgrimage site, so that the chapel soon became too small to accommodate the many pilgrims. Pastor Staufer from the Wagenhofen parish had the current chapel built under his leadership in 1785. In 1796 and 1800 the miraculous image had to be brought to safety to protect it from the raids of French soldiers.

The chapel is a single-nave hall building with a gable roof. A small roof turret with a pyramid roof serves as a bell tower.

The interior with a painted mirrored ceiling has had a Baroque ceiling painting since 1947, in which the Assumption of Mary into heaven is shown. It was painted by Johann Baumann from Munich. The room is equipped with an elaborate baroque altar in which the picture of the Black Madonna, surrounded by angels and saints, is presented in a magnificent gilded frame. The walls are almost completely covered with votive tablets . A host bill from 1820 shows that masses are read almost every day. In 1907 a 200-page prayer book was published. The church has always received abundant donations from parishioners and pilgrims.

In 1935 the chapel received a tabernacle with the stipulation that mass must be read at least once a week. In the same year, the processions were banned by the National Socialists .

Renovations

Thanks to a rich influx of donations, the structure of the church could always be preserved. A thorough renovation took place in 1888/89 and 1923. In 1951 the roof turret was renewed and enlarged and covered with new roof shingles. Roof tiles from 1795 came to light. Around 1952 the chapel received two bells.

In 1964 cracks in the vault and in some cases in the walls gave rise to further renovation. The badly affected ceiling paintings and ornamental paintings were restored by the church painter Löhnert from Ingolstadt. A smoke vent was installed for the burning candles. The image of grace got a halo . In 1969 the mosaic of a protective mantle Madonna was attached to the facade, financed by an anonymous donor from Feldkirchen. The mosaic was designed and executed by D. Inninghof from Dachau.

In 1985 a major interior and exterior renovation was carried out, which was completed in September 1985 for the bicentenary of the pilgrimage chapel.
