Matanzas

The Hershey Railway is the only electrified railway line in Cuba . It connects Havana with Matanzas . It is named after Central Hershey , a sugar mill formerly operated by the Hershey Chocolate Corporation of Pennsylvania with an attached workers' settlement. It is one of the few surviving interurbans in America.

history

In 1916 the Hershey Company bought large estates east of Havana. She built the large Central Hershey sugar mill between the capital (around 45 kilometers east) and Matanzas . To transport the products and workers, a 135 km long track network was created, which was electrified from 1919. In January 1922, passenger operations began between Matanzas and the Zuckermühle with rolling stock from General Electric and J. G. Brill .

Route

The starting point in Havana is the Casablanca train station on the eastern bank of the narrow entrance to Havana Bay. It is connected to the old town of Havana by a ferry .

On the way east, the tourist coastal town of Guanabo is touched before the depot and the workshop of the Hershey Railway in Camilo Cienfuegos , the former Central Hershey sugar mill named after the revolutionary hero of the same name, halfway between Havana and Matanzas near Santa Cruz del Norte .

Current situation

Only passenger transport is still electric with railcars imported from Spain. It is possible that operations will switch entirely to diesel vehicles in the near future. The current operator is Ferrocarril Eléctrico de Cuba (FELCUBA) based in Havana.

Currently (February 2018) there is no traffic in the Casablanca station. The rails are muddy and overgrown, but the station is manned by staff (ticket sales and station masters), who say there is no train service or replacement rail service.

After Hurricane Irma in September 2017, Deutsche Bahn suspended all traffic until further notice. Only since spring 2018 have some trains been running again on the Hershey (Camilo Cienfuegos) - Jaruco branch.
