Georg Heinrich Thiessen

Georg Heinrich Thiessen (born January 19, 1914 in Eddelak near Brunsbüttelkoog , † July 3, 1961 ) was a German astronomer .

Life

Georg Thiessen studied physics and mathematics and received his doctorate in 1940 at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen under Richard Becker . In 1943 he came to the Fraunhofer Institute of the Reich Office for High Frequency Research in Freiburg im Breisgau , where he met Karl-Otto Kiepenheuer . In January 1945 he was transferred to the observatory in Hamburg-Bergedorf , where he was an assistant and then an observer from 1946 to 1953. In 1953 he completed his habilitation on the sun's magnetic field , and in 1959 he was appointed professor. He believed that there was a general solar magnetic field.

On July 3, 1961, he was killed in a head-on collision with a tram, and his wife was seriously injured in this accident.

In 1970 the Thiessen crater on the back of the moon was named after him.

Sunspots

Thiessen dealt extensively with sunspots . He observed that the granulation that occurs everywhere on the rest of the sun's surface does not exist in the umber . On closer inspection of the sunspots, however, he noticed that there were small, lighter spots (umbral dots) within the umber. They are difficult to observe because of the high contrast to the bright surroundings of sunspots. These spots provide information about the internal structure of sunspots and are still the subject of astrophysical research.
