Hervé Carrier

Hervé Carrier SJ (born August 26, 1921 in Grand-Mère, today Shawinigan , Québec / Canada ; † August 2, 2014 ) was a Canadian Jesuit as well as a sociologist and theologian .

Life

Hervé Carrier studied at Collège Saint-Ignace and at the Collège Sainte-Marie in Montreal and joined in 1944 the Congregation of the Jesuits in. After his priestly training, he was ordained a priest in 1955 . He graduated from the University of Montreal in philosophy and from the Facultés de la Compagnie de Jésus à Montréal in theology. He then studied sociology in Canada, the United States and France and graduated from the Catholic University of America in Washington. After working at Harvard University , he studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and received his doctorate in sociology from the University of Paris in 1959 . He was a lecturer at the Institute for Social Sciences at the Institut Catholique de Paris for one year .

Since 1959 he was professor of sociology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . From 1966 to 1978 he was Rector of the Gregorian, succeeding Édouard Dhanis ; In 1978 Carlo Maria Martini was his successor. During his rectorate, Hervé Carrier worked on the modernization of the Gregorian for 12 years.

Carrier was President of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU) from 1970 to 1980 and Director of the International Research Center of IFCU from 1978 to 1982 and a member of the Conference of Rectors of European Universities (CRE). In 1970 he was involved in the founding of the United Nations University in Paris.

Pope John Paul II appointed him secretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture from 1982 to 1993 .

He is a member of the Academy of Letters and Human Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts . He is an officer in the French Legion of Honor . He has been awarded honorary doctorates in China and Korea.

Carrier was the author of numerous books and scientific articles, e.g. on the sociology of religion and issues of culture.
