Hervé Théry (born December 4, 1951 in Somain , France ) is a French geographer . Théry helped establish the concepts and methods of French regional geography in Brazil .

He is a graduate of the École normal supérieure in Paris, research director at the Center de recherche et de documentation sur l'Amérique latine (CREDAL), holder of the Pierre Monbeig Chair and currently professor at the University of São Paulo in Brazil. In 2007 he founded the Franco-Brazilian magazine Confins .

His research focuses on the dynamics of the Brazilian territory, he is particularly concerned with pioneer fronts , which, characterized as agricultural colonization , advance further into the Amazon forest . The spread of these fronts to the detriment of the tropical rainforest creates great ecological and social tensions that require detailed analysis and discussion, to which, according to Théry, geography can contribute primarily through the use of rational thematic maps .
