Live and act
Herwart Ambrosius is the son of the composer Hermann Ambrosius and his wife Else, b. Roth. After attending a private school for two years, he switched to the Petri-Reformrealgymnasium in Leipzig in 1934 . His visit he had to interrupt in 1943 because he was called up for military service, where he was wounded on a mission in Normandy . In 1946 he passed his Abitur and studied biology and chemistry at the University of Leipzig from 1946 to 1950 .
In 1951 he became a scientific aspirant or assistant and later a senior assistant and lecturer at the Zoological Institute of the University of Leipzig. In 1954 he was at Arno Wetzel and Kurt Alverdes with the thesis about some in the histological fixation factors acting for Dr. rer. nat. PhD . In 1961 he completed his habilitation on heteroplastic gonadal transplants at Urodelen and acquired the venia legendi in the field of zoology.
After lecturing in zoology at the Zoological Institute from 1962 to 1964, Ambrosius was appointed professor with a teaching position for zoology and in 1969 full professor for animal physiology and immunobiology. He set up teaching and research groups for both animal physiology and immunology. He dealt with the development and regulation of the immune system , the structure of immunoglobulins and the application of immunological techniques. The latter led to several patents. In 1991 he was dismissed as a full professor because he had reached the age limit.
In addition to his academic work, Ambrosius held numerous administrative and advisory functions. Examples are: 1968–1971 Director of the Biosciences Section at Karl Marx University Leipzig, 1969–1971 Head of the “Immune Mechanisms” research project at the Ministry of Health of the GDR, 1975–1983 Member of the Steering Committee of the Task Force on Control of Vaccines in the WHO and 1976–1990 head of the main research area “Immunology” in the “Biosciences” program of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , of which he was a full member from 1985 to 1991.
