Herwig Kogelnik (born June 2, 1932 in Graz ) is an Austrian-American physicist who deals with laser physics , optoelectronics and optical communication technology.

Kogelnik graduated from Vienna University of Technology with a degree in engineering in 1955 and received his doctorate there in 1958 and again in 1960 at Oxford University (Ph.D.). From 1961 he was at Bell Laboratories , where he was finally director of the electronics research laboratory and the photonics research laboratory (from Alcatel-Lucent in Crawford Hill).

Kogelnik is known for fundamental work on laser resonators and the optics of Gaussian-shaped wave packets (as in lasers). In 1971 he was a pioneer with Charles Shank in the development of the Distributed Feedback Laser (DFB) and was thus a pioneer in WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing ). He also studied holography and developed the theory of extended holograms with applications in integrated optics.

In 1989, Kogelnik was President of the Optical Society of America . In 1994 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and in 2006 he was awarded the National Medal of Technology . He received the IEEE Medal of Honor , the IEEE Quantum Electronics Award (1991) and the Frederic Ives Medal . In 2001 he received the Marconi Prize . He holds 35 patents (2001).
