Sacred Heart Church (Lugano)
The parish church Sacro Cuore (Sacred Heart) is located in Lugano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland in the district of Molino Nuovo. It belongs to the diocese of Lugano .
History, building
The neo-Romanesque church was built from granite and porphyry in 1922–1927 by the architects Enea Tallone (1876–1937) and Silvio Soldati (1885–1930) and in 1952 by Pope Pius XII. raised to the minor basilica .
The facade and the porch are decorated with reliefs by the sculptor Fiorenzo Abbondio (1892–1980). The entire interior is provided with frescoes by Vittorio Traiani, which show scenes from the life of Christ as well as saints and prophets. The frescoes are complemented by mosaics .
In the crypt are the graves of some of the bishops of the Diocese of Lugano .
Furnishing
The organ on the west gallery was built in 1952 by the organ building company Balbiani-Vegezzi Bossi. The instrument has 21 stops on two manual works and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are electro-pneumatic.
