The Sacred Heart Hospital is a non-profit religious hospital of the Vinzenz Group in Baumgasse 20A in the 3rd district of Vienna, Landstrasse . The hospital has 168 beds and 440 employees. In 2015, 5338 operations were performed, 22,494 people were treated as outpatients and 12,894 inpatients.

history

The Congregation of the Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was founded in Paris in 1866 by Abbè Peter Viktor Braun . During the Franco-Prussian War , the Viennese medical officer and Maltese , Baron Jaromír von Mundy (one of the later founders of the Vienna Rescue Society), got to know and appreciate the Sacred Heart Sisters in a military hospital in Versailles Palace . He recommended her to the later director of the Rudolf Foundation Böhm, who called her to his hospital for nursing. In 1873 13 sisters arrived in Vienna and began their service with the sick. Due to the increasing number of sisters, the construction of today's motherhouse in Keinergasse (then provincial house) became necessary in 1890 . This building, in which the oldest part of the hospital is located, is now a listed building, as is the church, monastery and "school".

In 1906 the Herz-Jesu-Kirche was consecrated, and in 1931 the school building with day care center (kindergarten and after-school care center) was opened. In July 1920 Ignaz Seipel , who was Federal Chancellor in Austria from 1922 to 1924 and 1926 to 1929, was appointed Superior of the Sacred Heart Congregation by Cardinal Friedrich Gustav Piffl . From 1920 to 1932 he lived in the house on Keinergasse, in what is now the patient lounge of the Sacred Heart Hospital.

During the Second World War , all the expendable rooms of the monastery were confiscated by the Wehrmacht for a reserve hospital. Sisters took care of the injured soldiers. When the war was over, the sisters continued to show their willingness to work for the common good and recruited doctors and staff. In 1945 the military hospital became a private, non-profit hospital.

Buildings and Administration

In order to offer employees a place to live, the staff residence was built in 1989. Today the hospital administration is located in this area. In 2000 the wing in Rabengasse followed, which was equipped with an interdisciplinary monitoring unit. The hospital was integrated into the Vinzenz Group in 2007 for personnel and economic reasons. Like the Sacred Heart Sisters before that, the Vinzenz Group follows the principle of non-profit status. The Herz-Jesu-Krankenhaus is not yet profit-oriented and is open to everyone.

In 2011 the "floating operating room" was added to the Sacred Heart Hospital. From 2013 to the beginning of 2015, a new building complex was built on the hospital premises in Rabengasse, which connects the hospital with the administration building. The intensive care unit with a direct connection to the operating theater, patient rooms and offices are located in the new area. The new building complex in Rabengasse marked the start of several redesigns in the hospital. In the summer of 2015 the enlarged Herz-Jesu Café and the new staff dining room opened. In mid-2016, a new hospital kitchen and a new staircase in the administration building were built. The new day clinic went into operation in October 2016.

The Herz-Jesu Hospital has been a specialist clinic for the musculoskeletal system since January 2017. In the course of this decisive change, the orthopedic department was incorporated from the hospital of the Sisters of Mercy into the Sacred Heart Hospital. The Herz-Jesu Hospital now has a comprehensive range of orthopedics in two departments. At the end of December 2016, surgery moved from the Sacred Heart Hospital to the Sisters of Mercy hospital, where a specialist clinic for the entire digestive tract and urological area, oncology and psychosomatic medicine was established in 2017.

The Herz-Jesu Hospital has specialized in the following areas: anesthesia, intensive medicine and pain therapy, orthopedics and orthopedic surgery as well as internal medicine with a department for acute geriatrics and remobilization.
