Heartctopia , ectocardia, cardiocele ( Greek Ectopia cordis ) is a rare congenital displacement ( ectopia ) of the heart from the chest. So far, only 210 cases have been documented.

In the case of defects in the chest wall , the fetal heart can be displaced in front of the chest ( ectocardia thoracica ) or in the case of larger gaps in the diaphragm ( diaphragm) in the abdominal cavity ( ectocardia subthoracica ).

diagnosis

Even Prenatal can ectopia cordis by sonography be detected (ultrasound). If ectopia cordis is suspected , a fetal echocardiography should be performed. Once the child is born, at least the thoracic ectocardia becomes characteristic: the heart is shifted in front of the chest and bulges outwards in a clearly visible manner . The skin at this point can either be normal or absent.

therapy

If a diagnosis is made during pregnancy, an interdisciplinary treatment plan should be drawn up before the birth so that optimal cooperation between pediatrics , neonatology , cardiac surgery , pediatric surgery and plastic surgery is guaranteed.

It is advisable to give birth by caesarean section ( Caesarean section ) to prevent contusion of the outwardly displaced heart during the birth.

The therapy consists of the surgical removal of the causes of the heart topia (gaps in the sternum, gaps in the diaphragm, etc.).

To protect the child until the operation, a plastic compression girdle is used to protect the heart from injuries and bumps.

forecast

The prognosis of heartctopia is poor. External compression of the ectopic heart often leads to life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias . The ectopia cordis can only be surgically corrected to a minor extent .
