Herzi HaLewi ( Hebrew : הרצי (הרצל) הלוי) (born 1967 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli major general of the IDF . He has been head of the Aman military intelligence service since 2014 and has also been the commander of the Israeli southern command since mid-2018 .

education

HaLewi studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem from 1995 to 1998 and graduated with a BA in Philosophy and Business Administration . From 2004 to 2005 he studied at the renowned National Defense University in Washington, DC and graduated with a master's degree in "National Resources Management". He completed a Brigade Commanders 'Course in 2007 and a Division Commanders' Course in 2010.

Military career and activities

In the IDF he served from 1985 to 1992 in various command tasks in the paratrooper brigade . From 1993 to 1998 he was employed in various positions in anti-terrorism units. From 2000 he was chief of operations planning of the IDF and from 2001 commander of the anti-terrorist units of the IDF. From 2005 he commanded the IDF Menashe Brigade and the West Bank Brigade ( "Judea and Samaria Division"), stationed in Jenin and the north of the West Bank . After that he commanded, among other things, the Galilea unit of the IDF. In 2004 he switched to the management of the Israeli military college . In 2014 he was appointed head of the Israeli military intelligence service Aman.

On June 6, 2018, HaLewi became the commander of the Israeli South Command and is responsible for IDF activities in and in the Gaza Strip . In November 2019, he commanded the IDF commandos in Operation Black Belt fighting Islamic Jihad in Palestine (PIJ). Previously, the IDF air force targeted the high-ranking PIJ commander and head of the al-Kuds brigades , Baha Abu al-Ata in Gaza .

Herzi HaLewi is married and has four children.
