The Duke Magnus Monument near Obereisesheim , a district of Neckarsulm in the Heilbronn district in Baden-Württemberg , has been commemorating the death of Duke Magnus (1594–1622) at the Battle of Wimpfen in 1622 since 1900 .

history

The young Duke of Württemberg, Magnus, fell on May 6, 1622 at the Battle of Wimpfen on the ridge west of Obereisesheim. With him, the older Württemberg-Neuenbürg line in the male line, which he had founded only a few years earlier, expired .

In 1900, the Heilbronn Historical Association , chaired by Alfred Schliz , decided to celebrate the battle on a day of remembrance instead of the traditional annual excursion and as an expression of the “honor our people owe to an illustrious offspring of our Princely House [...] who died there for his faith died ” to erect a memorial stone on Holzweg at the place of the Duke's death, about one kilometer outside Obereisesheim . For this purpose, the historical association acquired a small plot of land on which an approximately two meter high syenite block with a plinth was built. A copper plaque with the inscription “Duke Magnus von Württemberg died in these fields in the 28th year of his life Battle of Wimpfen May 6, 1622 , was embedded in the block . v. histor. Heilbronn Association ” . The panel is framed by the Württemberg coat of arms , military equipment, and leaves and scrollwork . The monument was inaugurated on May 5, 1900.

The local council of Obereisesheim decided to add modern information boards to the monument on the occasion of the local jubilee (1250 years Eisesheim, 767-2017) in 2017. [obsolete] Since the necessary funds could not be raised in the Neckarsulm budget, especially since the monument is not owned by the city and the measure could only have been financed as a voluntary service, the local council and local administration of Obereisesheim and the Heilbronn Historical Association called in whose possession the monument is still in place, started a fundraising campaign.
