Magnus (Württemberg-Neuenbuerg)
Magnus (born December 2, 1594 in Kirchheim unter Teck ; † May 6, 1622 near Wimpfen , died) was Duke of Württemberg . As the later son of Duke Friedrich I, he founded the older branch line Württemberg-Neuenbürg , which, however, died out again with his untimely death.
Life
Magnus was the thirteenth child of Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg and his wife Sibylla von Anhalt . He enjoyed a befitting education at the Collegium Illustre in Tübingen and through trips to France and Italy .
After completing his training, he entered the military and served first in the Republic of Venice and then in the Protestant Union .
After his father Friedrich had died in 1608, the inheritance comparison between the male descendants who were still alive was made in 1617. As the youngest of the five brothers, Duke Magnus was awarded Neuenbürg Palace as his residence and an annual payment of 10,000 guilders.
After the dissolution of the Protestant Union in 1621, Magnus was appointed War Colonel of Württemberg. The subsequent Württemberg policy of neutrality in the Thirty Years War did not please him, however, and he joined the Baden margrave Georg Friedrich with two regiments . Shortly afterwards he fell in the battle of Wimpfen on May 6, 1622. His corpse, disfigured by several wounds, was released and buried in the Stuttgart collegiate church.
Magnus died unmarried and without an heir, so his property reverted to the Stuttgart line.
In the Neckarsulm district of Obereisesheim on the Höhe am Holzweg, where he had fallen, the Heilbronn Historical Association erected the Duke Magnus monument in 1900 , which consists of a syenite block almost 2 m high . The inset copper plaque reads: "The heroic death of Duke Magnus von Württemberg died in these fields in the 28th year of his life - Battle of Wimpfen - May 6, 1622."
