The heart cell suspension ball ( Gomphosphaeria aponina ) is a type of cyanobacteria , or "blue-green algae". The species lives in plankton in lakes and ponds. It is a type species of its genus.

features

The species forms colonies from a few (up to ten) cells (length from 4 to 13 µm) of blue-green to olive color, they turn yellow towards the end of the vegetation period. They sit at the end of branched jelly stems. The colonies are up to 100 µm in size. The cells are elongated or heart-shaped. During the divisions, the cells are often conspicuously heart-shaped.

distribution

The species lives in plankton of eutrophic waters, but also in salty water, for example in salt pans or the Baltic Sea.
