The pseudo broad-winged bat ( Hesperoptenus ) are a species of bat in the family of smooth noses (Vespertilionidae). The species live in Southeast Asia.
Representatives of the genus reach a head-trunk length of 40 to 75 mm and a tail length of 24 to 53 mm. The forearms are 25 to 60 mm long. Smaller species weigh around 6 g, while larger species weigh 30 to 32 g. The fur is gray-brown, red-brown or yellow-brown, depending on the species. The Hesperoptenus species differ from the broad-winged bats ( Eptesicus ) by deviating details of the skull and teeth.
These bats rest individually or in small groups on well-leafy trees. Single individuals or pairs defend a hunting ground against other species. They start their insect hunt early in the evening. The reproductive behavior is mainly known for the Tickell's pseudo-broad wing ( Hesperoptenus tickelli ). In this species, the females give birth to a young in May or June.
The following species belong to the genus.
- Hesperoptenus blanfordi , from Northern Thailand and Laos to Borneo .
- Hesperoptenus doriae , Malay Peninsula , Borneo.
- Hesperoptenus gaskelli , eastern Sulawesi .
- Hesperoptenus tickelli , dispersed populations in mainland Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka .
- Hesperoptenus tomesi , Malay Peninsula, Borneo.
