The Counts and Countesses of Hessenstein were two different lines of unequal descendants of rulers from the House of Hesse .

Descendants of Frederick I of Sweden

Friedrich Wilhelm (Fredrik Vilhelm, 1735–1808) and Karl Eduard (Carl Edvard, 1737–1769), the two sons of the Swedish King Friedrich (Friedrich von Hessen-Kassel, 1720–1751) and his official mistress, Countess Hedvig Ulrika Taube , were raised to Counts of Hessenstein in 1741 and received the rule of Hessenstein (with the Panker estate ) in Holstein . Friedrich Wilhelm von Hessenstein was governor of Swedish Pomerania from 1776 to 1791 .

The ten children of Landgrave Wilhelm IX. and later Elector Wilhelm I of Hessen-Kassel and his third (well-known) maitress , Karoline von Schlotheim (* July 6, 1766 - January 7, 1847), were "legitimized" on March 10, 1800 and received on May 2 1811 the title of Countesses and Counts of Hessenstein, named after the rule of Hessenstein in Holstein.
