Heterobathmia is a morphologically primitive genus of butterflies. They are the only genus of the family Heterobathmiidae and the suborder Heterobathmiina of butterflies . The animals occur in the temperate (moderately warm) south of South America .

features

The primitive moths feed on pollen from various species of beech trees ( Nothofagus ). They can easily collect pollen with their specially shaped maxillary palps, which consist of five segments , while they grind it up with the teeth on the mandibles and the epipharynx (appendix of the head capsule) before they eat it. In contrast to the primeval moths (Micropterigidae) of the suborder Zeugloptera , which also eat pollen, the moths of the Heterobathmiidae are less specialized in pollen-eating. They only have one mouth tool to collect pollen and they lack the sensilla placodea (a heart-shaped and perforated structure) on the labial and maxillary palps. They are therefore more closely related to the subordination Glossata .

species

So far, eleven species have been discovered, with Heterobathmia pseuderiocrania being the most common and widespread.
