Heterometrus nepalensis is a Nepalese scorpion in the Scorpionidae family .

description

The holotype is an adult male scorpion 83 millimeters long, and therefore rather small compared to other species in the genus Heterometrus . It has a uniform reddish black color, only the telson is lighter and the crests of the comb organ are yellow. The surface of the carapace is smooth, there are granules on the edges. The combs of the comb organ have 14 and 15 teeth. The chelae of the Pedipalps are lobed, hairy and covered with round granules. The second segment of the metasoma is longer than it is wide. There are short and long setae on the legs. The telson is spherical, with a poisonous bladder that is longer than the poison sting . No other specimens have been found so far. Based on his knowledge of other species of the genus Heterometrus , the author of the first description assumes that there is no pronounced sexual dimorphism in Heterometrus nepalensis .

Heterometrus nepalensis is similar to the species Heterometrus indus , but differs from it in its shorter and wider segments of the metasoma. In addition, the occurrence of Heterometrus indus is limited to Sri Lanka , while Heterometrus nepalensis is only known from Nepal.

distribution and habitat

The terra typica of Heterometrus nepalensis is the "Island Jungle Resort" in the west of the Chitwan National Park ( 27 ° 33 ′ 0 ″  N , 84 ° 20 ′ 0 ″  E ). The Chitwan National Park has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its unique flora and fauna with numerous endemic species . The national park is characterized by dense and varied vegetation.

Initial description

The first description was made by the Czech arachnologist František Kovařík as part of his revision of the genus Heterometrus published in 2004 on the basis of a single collection copy. The holotype is an 83 millimeter long adult male scorpion collected in 1993. It is in the collection of František Kovařík in Prague.

etymology

The species name refers to Nepal as the place where the holotype was found. Heteromentrus nepalensis is the first species of scorpion described from Nepal.
