Heteronotus is a genus of the humpback cicadas or humpback chirps ( Membracidae ), a family of the round-headed cicadas (Cicadomorpha) from the superfamily of the Membracoidea.

features

Humpback sirp of the species Heteronotus nodosus in micro- CT . You can see the internal anatomy of the insect, especially that the large pronotum is empty. Clear are z. B. to recognize the flight muscles.

The species of the genus Heteronotus are relatively large (7.5 to 11 cm) and mostly strongly colored. The often brightly colored pronotum is very long, directed backwards and has spherical thickenings and thorns. The head is significantly wider than it is high and the complex eyes are very large and protruding. The forewings are transparent and significantly longer than the abdomen .

Ecology and way of life

With some species it is assumed that it could be an imitation of wasps or bees ( mimicry ), Heteronotus delineatus is reminiscent of a twig. If the pronotum attachment is violated or canceled, it cannot be regenerated. It has been reported that in some places more individuals with a damaged process were found than those with an undamaged pronotum.

Sexual dimorphism is common, for example the males and females in Heteronotus nigrogiganteus differ very strongly .

The adults are usually found individually, in some species the larvae are often found in groups of three or four animals together with ants. Little is known about the way of life.

Distribution and types

The genus contains 44 species that occur in South America from Argentina to Panama ( Neotropics ). Several species are only known from one country; Heteronotus glandiferus, H. horridus, H. spinosus and H. trinodosus are known from a relatively large number of countries .
