Wilhelm Ludwig Bogislav von Steinwehr (born February 15, 1774 in Berlin ; † December 12, 1854 there ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and most recently president of the senior military examination commission.

Life

origin

Wilhelm Ludwig Bogislav was a member of the original Holstein noble family Steinwehr . His parents were the Prussian major general Friedrich Wilhelm von Steinwehr (1733-1809) and his wife Margarethe Henriette von Below (* June 16, 1744, † June 28, 1775) from the House of Klein-Machlin.

Career

He went to Berlin as a cadet on September 26, 1783, where he joined the Academie militaire on April 1, 1786 . On March 23, 1791, he became an ensign in Infantry Regiment No. 26 . On June 8, 1793 he became a second lieutenant and as such he took part in the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 . From 1796 to May 31, 1799 he was adjutant in the regiment, and from March 20, 1804 he was adjutant in the general staff. On June 3, 1804 he was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant before he was then adjutant to General von Larisch in 1805 . On November 23, 1806 he was still staff captain , in the following Fourth Coalition War he fought in the battle of Prussian Eylau and in the battle of Königsberg. For Prussian Eylau he received the Pour le Mérite on February 21, 1807 .

On May 6, 1807 he became a captain and lieutenant quartermaster, and on December 26, 1808, he joined the General Staff of the Tauentzien Brigade. He was promoted to major in the General Staff on May 24, 1809. As he was no longer fit for the field due to illness, he asked for his departure. But Scharnhorst and the king decided to transfer him to the General War Department on August 19, 1811. There he was appointed lieutenant colonel on December 8, 1813 . For his achievements in the war department, he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class on a white ribbon and the war commemorative coin on June 3, 1814 . On February 23, 1815 he became director of the Upper Military Examinations Commission. On April 3, 1815, he received permission to wear the Officer's Cross of the French Legion of Honor , and on June 20, 1815, he was promoted to colonel .

On May 15, 1816 he also got permission to wear the Swedish Sword Order , on March 30, 1820 he became major general with a patent on April 3, 1820. On July 26, 1823 he received the service cross and on January 22, 1826 the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd class with oak leaves . On March 30, 1832 he was still President of the Upper Military Examination Commission, on January 18, 1833 he received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class . On March 5, 1834, because of his illness, he retired as lieutenant general. He died on December 12, 1854 in Berlin and was buried on December 16, 1854 in the cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg .

He married Henriette Juliane Charlotte Günther (1798–1857) in Breslau on March 3, 1808 , a daughter of the accountant Karl Friedrich Günther. The couple had only one son:
