history

Wesel was a Prussian fortress town until the beginning of the process of softening, and there was a parade ground on the Heuberg. With the start of this process, sports enthusiasts aimed to use the area as a lawn. In the years from 1909 to 1911, however, this led to conflicts with the military, which was still strongly represented in the city and wanted to continue using the area as a pure parade ground. The city administration and the royal high school in Wesel advocated sporting use by the superordinate military administration, but a solution could only be found from April 1911 after a new fortress commander was called up. The Weseler Gymnastics Club and the local schools were given permission to share the space, and another area near Fusternberg was approved for shared use.

After the First World War , the military withdrew from the city, which allowed the city to dispose of the area of the former parade ground. In 1922, the Weseler Turnverein presented a plan for a sports field and on May 18, 1924, the Heuberg sports field was inaugurated. It consisted of a large lawn, surrounded by a 360 meter long cinder track, diving pits, modern sanitary facilities, changing rooms and meeting rooms. There were also three tennis courts on the north side of the court. The main square and the surrounding track were used for athletics and various lawn games. From 1929 the Wesel gymnastics club also had its own football department. In the course of the Second World War , the use of the sports field declined significantly and after 1945 the facility could no longer be used due to bomb attacks.

It was possible to use the sports field again from 1950, even if in the same year the southern part of the area facing the Berliner Tor was given to the Deutsche Bundespost . For the remaining part of the site, city director Karl-Heinz Reuber proposed the construction of a city hall in the 1950s, but this was not implemented. In 1960, the Weseler Spielverein, which was based on the Heuberg in the post-war years, relocated its activities to another sports field. To the north of today's park, the Stadtbad was built from 1963 to 1965 on Gantesweilerstraße. The establishment of a park on the adjacent site was already planned at that time. On November 17, 1972, the adjacent playground built by local young socialists was inaugurated on Heuberg. The construction of the Heubergpark, which was planned in the 1960s, began in 1980. The park was opened on May 2, 1981. In 1995 the adjoining public swimming pool was demolished and replaced by a new building completed in 1996. The new indoor swimming pool was named "HeubergBad". A sauna was set up next to it. As part of a youth fair held in the park in 2007, the idea for the EselRock Festival, which has been held in the park every year since 2008, was born.

The park is criss-crossed by paths and connected to the surrounding streets in several places. In addition to trees and small vegetation, it has several large meadow areas. The meadow areas include a larger hill on the south side, which is suitable for tobogganing in winter . There is also a 3,000 m² pond facing the swimming pool. A special feature is a small hill on the northeast side of the park, under which there is a casemate - a vault protected from artillery fire. It was part of a ravelin built in the 18th century for the Wesel fortress. Today it is an important roost for bats , especially the fringed bat , water bat and, more rarely, brown long-eared bats . The city of Wesel has designated the casemate as winter quarters for bats. Events on the subject of bats were held several times in the park and at the casemate.

The most famous recurring event in the park is the EselRock Festival. The festival, which has been held since 2008, had 7,000 visitors at the first event and was regularly able to attract around 10,000 visitors in the following years. It is a Free & Outdoor Music Festival.
