The Hianzenverein or the Burgenland-Hianzische Gesellschaft is an organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Burgenland dialect of " Hianzisch ". The Hanseatic UI dialect, which is still spoken in many parts of Burgenland, should be researched, documented and firmly anchored in the consciousness of the population. Further goals are, in addition to strengthening the awareness of the dialect, research into regional and local dialect forms and the publication of suitable dialect works. The association was founded in 1996 in Oberschützen in southern Burgenland to mark the 75th anniversary of Burgenland's membership in Austria .
With more than 1100 members, the Hianzenverein is one of the largest cultural associations in Burgenland.
House of Folk Culture
The House of Folk Culture, which opened in 2003, is the seat of the Hianzenverein in Oberschützen. With the support of the Burgenland provincial government, the home building with the folklore collection Simon and the documentation on Pastor Gottlieb August Wimmer in the renovated arcade house was expanded with a modern institute building. In 2004, the association was awarded the client's prize awarded by the Central Association of Architects in Austria .
In addition to the Hianzenverein, the House of Folk Culture also houses the Burgenland Folk Song Works and the Oberschützen Museum Association.
Hianz calendar
One of the mouthpieces of the Hianzenverein is the Hianzenkalender, which has been published annually in November since 1998 and has been published since 2015 under the name "Hianznbiachl". This includes articles from various subject areas such as "Language and Dialect", "Customs" or "Traditional Crafts". Dialect texts by various authors are also printed. The Hianzenkalender is supposed to be a companion throughout the year in the style of the old farmer's calendar.
